I don’t know how about in your area, but around here square-based fantasy RPGs used to be called “dungeons”. This name was given to the genre by no lesser game than the famous Dungeon Master. Released in 1987, it was a breakthrough in electronic role-playing. I clearly remember the general obsession this game provoked. The classic pen&paper DnD-like games got a direct hit. I’m not alone to consider this piece of sotware one of the most influential in the history of entertainment on the PC.

This particular boss was relatively harmless by himself, but sometimes a bunch of pretty dangerous daemons accompanied him. The boss couldn’t be harmed by conventional ways, one had to barricade him using regular walls and those yellow walls conjured by the Firestaff and then “fuse” him. A mere war-cry made him flee before you. Considering it’s the Lord of Chaos himself, it’s quite odd…

The outro might appear simple, but I wouldn’t want to have to make it with the kind of graphics software the developers might have possessed back in those days. The official manual contains some background to the events you go through in the dungeon and even though it was a kinda trashy story, I must say I liked it. It gave the neverending maze with a constant wall texture a breath of color and depth.

The sequel - Chaos Strikes Back - saw but a minor success, being more of a datadisk than something new. Dugeon Master 2, however, was a game a few people lost their sanity, families, jobs and mice for. DM2 next on the tour.
